NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION: TRICKS FOR A JOB INTERVIEW

According to a survey of 2,000 executives (source: Dailyinfographic):

  • during a job interview, what you say has an impact on the recruiter of only 7%, which is very low;
  • the impact is then due to 28% of your oral expression, and the confidence you inspire in your interlocutor. We are talking about your way of expressing yourself, the form and not the substance;
  • finally, the outfit, the attitude and the approach when you walk through the door impact the recruiter by up to 55%.

Therefore, the CV is important, but non-verbal communication in job interviews is an element that recruiters are very attentive to, whether the interview takes place in person or remotely. It helps you highlight your profile and give a positive first impression.

Let’s see how to master a set of rules.

The Handshake May Change Everything

When greeting the recruiter, follow his approach; if he doesn’t reach out to you, there’s no point in wanting a handshake. The handshake can be fatal: have your hand firm, without crushing his/her fingers, and avoid sticky or sweaty hands. If you have them, head to the bathroom for a quick hand washing.

Still about your hands: keep them open (it shows you’re listening), and no arms crossed (21% of negative impact). This posture is the sign of a closed, suspicious person who does not want to open up to others.
Also, avoid reaching for your hands (you may appear insecure) or holding one of your wrists (you could show some doubt).

If you constantly put your fingers on your mouth, nose or ears, it can betray a difficulty in answering or even a lie. Hand-in hair is OK once, but not during the whole interview otherwise you look stressed.

Eye Contact

Your eyes say a lot about you, but try to be yourself: as relaxed as possible, and always maintain a natural and regular visual connection with the recruiter, without insisting too much though.

Looking him/her straight in the eyes, of course without staring, is a sign of confidence and it facilitates communication. 67% of the recruiters feel that not having visual contact with the applicant is destabilizing.

Smile, But Don’t Overdo

Candidates who do not smile don’t give a good impression. Showing a natural smile has a positive and reassuring effect on others, thus on recruiters. Provided you don’t freeze it, the smile reveals an open, spontaneous and pleasant personality; qualities that will work in your favour.
Do not hesitate to practice it before the interview.
