COVER LETTER: 5 TIPS FROM OUR CAREER SPECIALISTS

When you apply for a job offer, your cover letter allows you to self-promote: you can let the Recruiter discover who you are and your strengths. Explaining your motivation in a few lines is not easy, but it can be a decisive factor in securing your job interview.

Our Career Experts have selected 5 simple but important tips to succeed and avoid mistakes.

1 – Cover Letter: Short And Concise

Use short sentences that make it easier for the recruiter to integrate the information from your CV.
Avoid repetition and diversify your vocabulary by using synonyms: too many letters talk about “competent”, “dynamic”, “open” or “serious” candidates. Try to be different, keep it short (around 250 words) and be confident about your professional experience and skills.
To help the Recruiter, use a classic, readable font and an airy layout. Use several paragraphs: in each one, express one key element at a time: the reasons why you are applying for the job offer, professional experience, etc.
Of course, watch out for grammar and syntax!

2 – Adjust The Tone And Style

Respond to the job offer using its same tone, vocabulary and style to show that you fit in with the company.
Make good use of the job posting’s keywords to make it clear not only that you have read it, but also that you know what you are talking about.
If the company is open to creativity, you can be creative as well. But most of all, write your letter in professional and respectful language: use a neutral, clear and direct tone.

3 – Hook The Recruiter From The Beginning

The introduction is crucial: it should be two or three lines long, precise, biting and dynamic. Set your goal and challenge the recruiter: remind them that the company is looking for a person with the experience/skills you effectively have.
And of course, first of all, tell the source of the job posting, and the position you are applying for (if there’s a reference number, write it down).

4 – Make The Most Of Your Skills In Your Cover Letter

Show that you have the right skills for the job through concrete examples. Sort through your professional experience to select those that show you are the person the recruiter is looking for.
No need to list all your skills: mention only those that are required for the position. Also, do not oversell yourself since the Recruiter will try to check your skills during the interview.

5 – How To End A Motivation Letter

The last part of the cover letter is where you can suggest what your collaboration could lead to. Show that you have read the job description and that you are able to meet their needs. Do not talk about the benefits for yourself, but only about the ones for the company.
Then make a request for an interview to deepen your skills and what you could offer the company.
Of course, the cover letter should end with greetings. There are different ways of ending, depending on the purpose of the letter and the person you are writing to, if you know them. Select a type of greeting that is aligned with the style of the letter.
