How to have a successful video job interview?

With the new technologies and the growth in remote working, video interviews are the preferred method for many recruiters. There are many benefits: time-saving, easy to use, no travel for applicants…

What is a video interview and how does it take place?

A video interview can be of 2 types: a classic live video interview via a videoconference tool or platform (e.g. MEET, Zoom, FaceTime etc), and a deferred video interview.

For this one, the recruiter plans questions for the candidate and sends them to him. The candidate answers them on video and sends them to the recruiter. A pre-recorded video like this can be used prior to a live interview, to qualify applications.

Get ready before the live interview

  • Check the quality of your connection and your equipment. Do you have enough battery power? Do the microphone and video work?
  • Sit in front of a neutral background. If any furniture or objects appear on the screen, make sure everything is tidy.
  • Search for a quiet place: no one should interfere with your interview.
  • Close unnecessary programmes. You don’t want to start a video or be bothered by some annoying notifications.
  • Keep your CV and links to your work just a click away so that you can quickly transfer them to the recruiter. Leave open a document in which you have noted the points to be covered, your questions, useful information about the position and the company, etc.

Some tips to have a successful video job interview

During a live video interview, you’ll be in almost the same conditions as the interview in person. The only difference is that you can choose the setting that surrounds you.

Instead, if you have to prepare a deferred video interview, you can repeat what you have said and make new takes if you are not happy with the final result. Of course, in this case, always stick to the info that the recruiter sent you: answer their questions and do not exceed the time they gave you.

For both of them, wear the same outfit as for a normal interview. Don’t stand too close to the webcam, and try to direct your gaze towards the camera, even if you’re recording. If you’re in a live conference, avoid big gestures and speak slowly enough to compensate for the possible live video lag.
