How to use LinkedIn to find a job

LinkedIn, as you have already seen on our blog, is not just the repository of our CV. It is a useful tool to demonstrate our personal skills and experience, to get in touch with recruiters, and also to find job listings that may be right for us.

The LinkedIn Jobs section is in fact very useful: sometimes we can find postings there that do not appear on other platforms, and it gives us a chance to get noticed, if we have a professional and active profile.

How to use the LinkedIn Jobs section

That section is available for all profiles, including free ones, and lets you target your job search according to: job title, skills, company and geographical area. Moreover, based on your title, LinkedIn already gives you suggestions on the position to search for.

You then have access to the available offers and can refine your search by setting some filters by date of publication (by displaying the job offers published in the last month, week or 24 hours), level of experience, type of job (full-time, part-time, fixed-term contract, work experience), etc.

If you are happy with these filters, you can set an alert and LinkedIn will send you a notification and/or an email when there are job offers that fall within the parameters you have chosen. You can choose to have that notification every day or once a week.

When a job position catches your eye, you can apply directly from LinkedIn by simply clicking on the “Easy apply” button: this will send your LinkedIn profile to the author of the job listing. Sometimes you’ll also have the chance to attach your CV.

In some cases, you may have an “Apply” button instead, in which case you will be redirected to the company’s website to complete your application.

When the recruiter views your application, an automatic LinkedIn email will arrive to let you know.

The #OpenToWork feature

For some time now, LinkedIn has been launching a new feature: a small banner that is added to the profile photo stating #OpenToWork. You can enable it by clicking here: it will let the recruiters know that you’re open to new job opportunities.

Don’t forget the whole preparation phase

Obviously, all of the above makes sense if you have taken care of your LinkedIn profile very well and if you are also publishing content related to your job sector. Don’t forget that recruiters are now increasingly using that platform to understand whether a person might be right for the open position. They will certainly do so in case your application arrives via LinkedIn.

If you are looking for a specific position and you are applying for advertisements for it, first make sure that you have exactly the right title and description. Not only will it be consistent with your application, but it will also help you appear in the searches of other recruiters.

Also take good care of your profile picture and your various professional experiences: do not just list them, but describe them and also include your achievements.
